Almanza Port & King Crab Route
Puerto Almanza is undeniably the best place in Tierra del Fuego to experience authentic, fresh seafood. On this full-day tour, we will explore one of the southernmost fishing villages on the planet. Home to around 200 fishermen, the village’s economy is centered around king crab and fish harvesting, along with other rural industries. As part of our “King Crab Route” tour, you’ll not only immerse yourself in the local culture and take in stunning landscapes, but also enjoy a home-cooked lunch at a fisherman’s restaurant.

THE EXPERIENCE
We’ll start our journey from Ushuaia on National Route #3, traveling through stunning, expansive valleys where we’ll enjoy landscapes surrounded by mountains and peat bogs. We’ll also pass by various ski resorts. On our way to Puerto Almanza, we’ll stop at a viewpoint to take pictures of this uniquely stunning scenery. Then, we’ll take Route J north, driving through the forest as we head south toward the Beagle Channel coast.
Once there, we’ll discover breathtaking views and begin exploring the channel. For example, we’ll see remnants from mussel harvesting, crab traps, and fishing boats. From that spot, you can also see Puerto Williams, a Chilean city on the other side of the channel.
Continuing along the coastal road known locally as “The King Crab Route,” we will gradually approach the village, where we will explore its single street, home to a few families who live exclusively off the sea. Much like Ushuaia would have been a century ago, this village combines a marine, andean, and forest environment with traditional marine production, with the king crab standing out—a reddish crustacean known locally as “red gold.”
Finally, after strolling through the village, we will visit a fisherman’s home to enjoy a delicious lunch featuring fresh local products, share pleasant moments, and chat about the experience before heading back to the city.
