Trekking to Emerald Lagoon Below Zero
We invite you to enjoy one of the most fascinating experiences winter in Ushuaia has to offer — walking on the completely frozen Laguna Esmeralda, surrounded by the Andes and their snow-covered cirque glaciers.
We take a pleasant hike along a snow-covered trail, walking through the native forest of Tierra del Fuego, painted in soft blue and white winter tones. We cross meltwater streams and gradually ascend through alpine terrain until we reach the stunning frozen Laguna Esmeralda — a true natural wonder.

THE EXPERIENCE
Explore a trail showcasing some of Ushuaia’s most breathtaking winter landscapes — snowy forests, vast peat bogs, frozen rivers, and the magnificent frozen Laguna Esmeralda at the end of the hike.
This 10 km (round trip) trail is completely covered in snow, giving you the feeling of walking through a fairytale. Snow-laden trees, frozen streams, icicles hanging from rocky ledges, and the bluish hues of the Andean peaks make this journey truly magical.
We’ll cross the snow-covered peat bogs — a wide open space where, during winter, activities like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding take place. It’s an impressive scene, and we’ll enjoy a gentle hike through it at our own pace.
Finally, we reach the incredible frozen Laguna Esmeralda. We leave our backpacks aside and prepare to walk across the icy surface of the lagoon — an unforgettable experience. There will be time for photos, a hot drink to warm up, and a delicious picnic to recharge before making our way back to the city.
