Emerald Lagoon
The trail to Laguna Esmeralda is one of the most popular and spectacular in Ushuaia, especially if we take into account the relationship between the difficulty and the views it offers. Without a doubt, this lagoon is one of the most visited, both by tourists and locals, thanks to its impressive beauty.
The route is just under 5 kilometers one way and takes approximately 2 hours. The path does not present great demands, although some slopes can be somewhat steep, and on rainy days, the path can be quite muddy, especially at the beginning.
Along the route, you will cross the native Fuegian forest, cross peat bogs and walk along the banks of Arroyo Esmeralda, with views of dams built by beavers. The effort will be worth it when you reach the lagoon, where you will be surprised by its intense green color, surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape.
Albino Eye Glacier
To reach the Ojo del Albino Glacier, you will first need to follow the trail to Laguna Esmeralda, but instead of turning back, you will continue for about 2.5 kilometers more through more challenging terrain. This additional stretch includes steep slopes that require a little more effort, but the landscape you will find at the end is well worth it.
The glacier and its frontal lagoon, surrounded by imposing mountains, offer an impressive view, ideal for photography lovers. From this high point, you will also be able to see a panoramic view of the Tierra del Fuego mountain range and Laguna Esmeralda from above, a spectacle that you cannot miss.
Vinciguerra Glacier and Iceberg Lagoon
This is one of the most exciting treks for adventurers. The total route is over 12 kilometres, with a gradient of 600 metres, reaching 1,000 metres above sea level. Due to its steep slopes and demanding terrain, it is recommended to be in good physical condition before embarking on this challenge.
What stands out most about this hike is the unique beauty of the Laguna de los Témpanos, whose water has a green hue due to the sediments and minerals discharged by the glacier. In addition, this area is part of a Ramsar Site, making it a key place for biodiversity and wetland conservation. If you do the trek during the thawing season, you may see ice formations in the vicinity of the lagoon, a true natural spectacle!
Mount Susanna
If you’re looking for the best panoramic views of Ushuaia, Mount Susana is the place to go. At 610 meters above sea level, the mountain is just 8 kilometers from the city center. The trail, which runs along the southeast slope of the mountain, will take you through native forests where you can observe different species of flora and fauna, while you get closer to the natural viewpoints.
When you reach the top, you’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of Ushuaia and its surroundings. From there, you can see the Beagle Channel and its islets, the imposing Chilean mountain range to the south, and the dense forest of Tierra del Fuego National Park to the west. Best of all, depending on the time of year, the landscape changes: the warm colors of autumn, the winter snows or the spring flowers offer a unique experience every season.
Martial Glacier
The Martial Glacier is one of the most classic and accessible trails in Ushuaia, ideal for those looking for a low-demand but equally spectacular hike. This cirque glacier, formed by a natural depression in the mountain, offers an impressive landscape, especially in winter, when snow covers everything around it, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty.
The trail is almost all uphill until you reach the base of the glacier, and along the way you can stop at the Mirador Cañadón Negro, from where you will have a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the glacier. Just 7 kilometers from the center of Ushuaia, the Martial Glacier is perfect for a short but intense hike, ideal for all levels.
